Vintage Nantucket Serigraph of The Nantucket South Church by Roy Clifford Smith, circa 1920s-1940s, a summer view of the historic Unitarian Church on Orange Street, the South Church at the top of Stone Alley, signed lower right, and titled lower left. Serigraphs are a labor intensive form of original artwork involving hand cutting and hand coloring a silkscreen lithograph.
While Smith’s work has a very modern feel anticipating the 1950s and 1960s, he was actually active much earlier in the 1920s-1940s. Not much else is known about this artist, other than his dozen and a half to two dozen Nantucket scenes executed in two different sizes, and a larger map of the island. Interestingly, his work was retailed long ago in the Jordan Marsh Home Decorating department.
