Antique French Quarterdeck Automaton Helmsman Clock by Andre Guilmet (Paris), Retailed by J. Sewill (London), circa 1881, having a bronzed and silvered case in the form of the stern of a ship with aft deck and raised quarterdeck, a working binnacle compass, automated helmsman at ship’s wheel acting as pendulum rocking to mark time, ship’s running lights gimbal mounted on posts, deck plank details and fittings, and a seaman coiling a line.

Antique French Quarterdeck Automaton Helmsman Clock by Andre Guilmet (Paris), Retailed by J. Sewill (London), circa 1881, an “industrial series” clock having a bronzed and silvered case in the form of the stern of a ship with aft deck and raised quarterdeck, a working binnacle compass, automated helmsman at ship’s wheel acting as pendulum rocking to mark time, ship’s running lights gimbal mounted on posts, deck plank details and fittings, and a seaman coiling a line, all mounted on a black marble base. The silvered dial bears Roman numerals and steel hands, and is inscribed “J. Sewill, 30 Cornhill, London. The clockworks are an 8 day time and strike driven by a two train movement with anchor escarpment.

Guilmet clocks are of superb quality, highly respected and sought after; those retailed by Sewill are favored even more. The clock is in fine original condition and has been freshly cleaned.
