19th Century Presentation Half Hull Model of a Whale Ship, circa 1850, a large plank on frame model of a bluff-bowed and wide abeam whale ship. The model was made from thin pine slats fastened on carved knees so is in fact very light weight: this was a model to hang in the ship yard or ship owner’s office, rather than used in the whip wright’s yard itself as a working template. The model is in it’s original red and black paint, and spruced with details such as the bowsprit and chainplates. This hull was found on Nantucket Island and came out of an old Siasconset collection.

The model remains quite strong and sturdy and in very good overall condition, though certainly shows its age with breaks to some of the strakes and minor chips and losses.

Period half hull models are fairly common, but ones of this size do not come on the market often, and, most importantly, half hulls of whale ships are extremely rare.
