China Trade port artists were famous for their brilliant, high quality and accurate depictions, and so were eagerly frequented by American and European ship’s officers and owners for portraits of themselves and their ships. In some cases the artists painted from photographs; that is probably the case here since the poses are so perfect and stylized.

The paintings are in excellent condition, but have both been re-lined at some time in the past. From close examination I would guess that at that time the professional conservator touched-up a few minor spots (the size of a nickel). The paintings are mounted in later carved and gilded frames.
