Antique Sailor’s Sea Chest, Late 19th Century, a British sailor’s sea chest made from tropic hardwood, possibly teak, of heavy, solid brass-bound construction with dove-tailed joints, reinforced molding around top and base, and a unique fish-shaped escutcheon; the hinged lid reveals a beautiful interior painted seascape with a British Square-Rigged Ship under full sail, with a lighthouse and another ship in the background, flying British ensign at stern, and series of signal flags including the “Blue Peter” for “All Hands Report on Board.” The interior has a till or glove box, and two additional sliding tills (which were most likely added a little later); the interior is inscribed with the name of the sailor “John Lindsey” and bears a later added brass plaque inscribed “The Old Homestead”, likely a Seaman’s Bethel or home for sailors retired from the sea.

The chest remains in excellent condition, solid and strong, and the painting remains in excellent, bright condition.
