19th Century China Trade Seascape with a Tea Clipper in Hong Kong Harbor, circa 1850, an oil on canvas seascape with starboard side view of a bark rigged auxiliary steamer at anchor in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor, under full standing rigging with all sails furled, White ensign flying off mizzen gaff, and crew visible on the foredeck; there are many sampans plying the water alongside the bark, and many junks at anchor in the background; the famous Hong Kong mountains rise to the horizon under a slightly cloudy blue sky; unsigned and mounted in a period carved and gilded frame. The painting has the crisp detail and feel one loves in Chinese Export paintings of the period, a pleasant palette, and an unusually brilliant play of light in the foreground where there are seabirds wheeling about the sampans.

The painting is in very good condition with the expected craquelure. The canvas has been relined, and there is possibly a touch of inpainting to a spot in the upper left sky.
