Chadwick was a carpenter who began weaving baskets in the later years of his life, taking lessons from well known island weaver Mitchy Ray. A talented man, Chadwick quickly learned to make a very strong, sturdy basket that was clearly inspired by Ray’s forms but were far superior in craftsmanship. Chadwick’s work was chosen in 1933 (along with Ferdinand Sylvaro’s) to represent lightship baskets in an exhibition of Nantucket handicrafts in Washington, DC.

The basket remains in excellent original condition with no discernible damage or repair, and has developed a beautiful, deep color and patina.
