Antique Miniature Whaling Decorated Sea Chest, circa 1920s, the top painted with the tail flukes of a sounding whale, flanked by two blue stars and the legend “Nantucket Island, 1825” on a green ground; the front painted with a sunrise whaling scene with American Bark under full sail, a whale with waif off the bow and a second sperm whale spouting astern, framed with a spliced and painted rope border; the sides having carved and red painted beckets holding spliced and painted rope handles, on green ground; the bottom is painted white; the interior is faux grain painted, with green on the lid. The bottom bears the small and faint inscription “ME FECIT, W. Graham Law, 20 Washington St., Assinippi, Mass.”
The maker could not be identified. The date of 1825 is a decorative choice and certainly not the date the piece was crafted. This wonderfully folky little chest remains in excellent condition, with enough mellowing of paint and dirt accumulated in the rope strands to proudly show its age.
