Antique Historic American Blue Star Flag, circa 1917, a World War I flag honoring a family member in service. The flag is hand crafted of linen. It is structurally sound and in very good condition, but does show its wonderful age in subtle fading and a few tiny holes. Mounted in a new bird’s eye maple frame with linen matting.
This flag was designed and patented by retired Army Captain Robert Queisser of the Ohio National guard, who wished to honor his sons who were serving in the trenches in the world war. Although not an official flag sanctioned by congress or the military, the flag became immediately popular and was flown by many families across the country. It preceded the better known Gold Star Flag honoring family members lost in service. This size flag was intended to be displayed in one’s home window rather than flying on a pole.
