A Sailor’s Folk Art Inlaid Box, circa 1850, a rectangular oak box with hinged lid, dovetailed construction and breadboard edges, with ebony, walnut and tropic wood inlaid harpoons, diamonds, stars and hearts. Clearly sailor’s work, and harpoons specifically indicate a whaler, making this quite a rare piece of folk art.

A Sailor’s Folk Art Inlaid Box, circa 1850, a rectangular oak box with hinged lid, dovetailed construction and breadboard edges, with ebony, walnut and tropic wood inlaid harpoons, diamonds, stars and hearts. Clearly sailor’s work, and harpoons specifically indicate a whaler, making this quite a rare piece of folk art.
The box remains in good, strong condition with all the inlay intact and the dovetails tight, but as the wood dried over the years the lid was warped a little in the right hand corner.
This box comes from the estate of the late Nantucket antiques dealer Howard B. Chadwick, Jr.
