Very Unusual 19th Century Matched Pair of Sailor’s Yachting Woolies, circa 1870, a true pair of woolworks featuring mirror images of the same Yawl rigged yacht, and period photographs of the husband and wife sailors surrounded by the flags of all the nations they visited on their cruise. The photographs I would guess are albumen silver prints. Both are mounted in what appears to be the original rose matting and pine frames. There is an empty reserve in the lower center of each panel which reveals to canvas backing to the woolies; these may have been intended to receive a card with the name of the yacht, the sailors or the dates of the cruise. The woolies are in very good condition with little or no fading. The wool does have some old moth damage, as often seen, but limited enough to not detract from the visual impact and appeal. These are the only such matched pair of yacht woolies with husband and wife photographs we have encountered.
Measures: Woolies: 15-1/4 in high x 16-1/4 in wide and 15-5/8 in high x 16-5/8 wide respectively Frames: 22 in high x 23-1/4 in wide and 22-1/2 in high x 23-1/2 in wide.
