John Erik Christian Peterson studied fine art at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen. He also studied with noted marine painters Daniel Herman Anton Melbye and Niels Carl F. Dahl, and served as an officer during Denmark’s short-lived war with Prussia and Austria in 1864. He emigrated to America in 1865 and settled in Boston, Massachusetts. He worked out of a studio at 12 West Street and became known for his dramatic, carefully rendered depictions of sailing vessels along the coast and on the high seas.
