19th Century reverse painted on glass portrait of George and Martha Washington by William Matthew Prior (1806 – 1873), one of New England’s great itinerant folk artists. Dating from early in his career during the early Federal Period, when the new nation was still in great patriotic spirit. The likeness is after the famous portraits by Gilbert Stuart, which was also copied in églomisé paintings by China Trade artists for export to the new nation. Prior was inspired to do the same, and apparently did a fair number of these when launching his career. None of them were signed, but are well-known. The painting is in great condition and in a period, most likely original frame.
