New England Seascape “Outward Bound” by James J. McAuliffe (1848 – 1921), circa 1912, an oil on canvas seascape with a whale ship passing a Pinkie Schooner on opposite tacks, signed and dated 1912 in the lower right. Pinky schooners, or pinks, were a unique style of vessel built mostly in Maine and Massachusetts having a sharp double-ended hull featuring a sharply pinched or “pinked” stern. Handy as fishing vessels, they were extremely seaworthy and handled well in rough waters.
