Antique Nantucket Sailor Boy Whirligig, circa 1880, by either Billy Ray or Charles C. Ray (born 1824), a hand carved flat figure of a sailor in brown and white paint, wearing round cap with metal ribbon, loose sailor’s blouse and pants, and carved shoes; face with sharply protruding nose and painted features. The original paddles are present and await remounting.

Ray (born 1824), a hand carved flat figure of a sailor in brown and white paint, wearing round cap with metal ribbon, loose sailor’s blouse and pants, and carved shoes; face with sharply protruding nose and painted features. The original paddles are present and await remounting.

The whirligig is in great condition with strong original paint. The original paddles also remain in great condition and just need to be pegged back into place. This is an unusual and exceptionally large whirligig.

This gig was most likely made by Billy Ray; the style is also very similar to that of Capt. Charles C. Ray although his dates would tend to be a little too early (this piece would have had to have been made by 1864).
