19th Century Sailor’s Woolie Depicting a “Sailor’s Farewell,” circa 1850, a British sailor’s folk art woolwork picture depicting a sailor taking leave of his sweetheart, with another sailor looking on while fishing in a pram, and with a full-rigged ship under full sail in the background. The “Sailor’s Farewell” was a very popular theme during the Victorian age depicted in painting, print and pottery. The theme is known but fairly scarce in woolworks. This particular woolie is extremely unusual and rare in that the sailor and sweetheart are Black Britons, (while the sailor in the pram is white).
