19th Century Sailor’s Folk Art Decorated Sea Chest, second half 19th Century, a large six board chest with elongate iron hinges, carved wooden beckets with original rope handles, iron strap reinforcements at edges, and wonderful old painted decoration featuring a fully rigged American ship under full sail with staysails aloft, flying the American ensign off the mizzen, within a rope cartouche with two whales at the bottom corners, and a conforming painted rope surround on the iron escutcheon.

19th Century Sailor’s Folk Art Decorated Sea Chest, second half 19th Century, a large six board chest with elongate iron hinges, carved wooden beckets with original rope handles, iron strap reinforcements at edges, and wonderful old painted decoration featuring a fully rigged American ship under full sail with staysails aloft, flying the American ensign off the mizzen, within a rope cartouche with two whales at the bottom corners, and a conforming painted rope surround on the iron escutcheon. The divided interior includes a generous sized covered till. The painted seascape is choice and exceptional.
The chest remains in fine, sturdy and strong condition, and the painted decoration likewise remains stable and strong. At some point a brass chain was added inside to hold the lid upright when opened.
