Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet, chevalier de Lamarck, often known simply as Lamarck, was a French naturalist, biologist, academic, and soldier. He was an early proponent of the idea that biological evolution occurred and proceeded in accordance with natural laws. An immensely important scientist, he was the first to use the term “biology” in its modern senses, coined the term “invertebrates,” remains a giant in the field of Malacology (the study of Molluscs), and was the first to formulate a comprehensive concept of biological evolution. His work inspired and was later confirmed by Charles Darwin’s master work.
