Antique Hand Carved Front Panel from a Sea Chest, late 19th Century, a hand carved solid pine plank with bas relief Sperm Whale flanked by Seahorses, in original dark stain, and retaining the hand cut dove-tails that attached this panel to the side boards of the chest. The bottom margin of the panel is weathered wood that had never received a stain or varnish – the chest had an applied molding along the bottom for strength and reinforcement.

This fragment remains in great condition. One wonders what the whole chest was like – perhaps killer carved beckets to match the front carving? It is fortunate that at least the front was saved for posterity.
