19th Century Sailor’s Folk Art Inlaid Wall Pocket, likely third quarter of the century, a sailor’s hand-crafted folk art wall box or pocket, fashioned with oak sides and pine back, the upper-most front panel is burlwood, the next two might be poplar and the lower-most one is maple; adorned with various wood inlaid large stars and smaller hearts, diamonds, crescent moons, shields and teardrops, and mother-of-pearl discs on the top panel. A very striking piece of functional folk art with great style – the flame finials of the top and scalloped border of the front panels are very Georgian Rococo inspired, while the side panel cuts have a more Victorian flavor.

The wall pocket remains in very good, strong and stable condition, with no loss and only the expected wood expansions and contractions from age. The braces on the back may very well be original at the time of construction; if added later it was a very long time ago.
