Antique Scrimshaw Panbone Plaque, circa 1850.
Antique Scrimshaw Panbone Plaque. Sailor’s folk art engraved whale panbone plaque, circa 1850, featuring full length portraits of two elegantly dressed ladies in the latest fashions, no doubt copied from a favored image in Godey’s Lady’s Book. The plaque is a large, thick and dense piece of whale bone. The period engraving is an excellent example of sailor’s work, untutored but talented. Rare indeed. A centerpiece for any collection.
