The strongly made basket remains in excellent condition.

The Brown family tradition of Nantucket basket making began with Walter Brown at the end of the 1960s a self-taught craftsman who signed his work Cross Rip. He taught his techniques to sons Martin and Gerald who both started making baskets for sale around 1970. Gerald continues as a full time maker on Old South Wharf, and Martin as time allows. They are distinguished by their sturdy oak construction and distinctive shaped handle. The scrimshaw is by Gerry Dupont, a cape Cod artist who started his craft in the 1970s, well known for his black and white nautical images.
