$1,500.00

Rare Early 20th Century Hand Crafted Mechanical Mallard Duck Decoy, circa 1920s, by an unknown “factory” decoy maker. The decoy bears a close resemblance to the Evans Standard Grade decoys, but has a hollowed out section in the bottom holding the hinge and spring lock mechanism which allows the head to be pivoted into a graduation of feeding and contented postures. The bottom is marked “Patent Applied For”.

The decoy is in great original condition. The strong original paint is clearly inspired by Mason with stylish breast swirls and thick brush strokes. An identical decoy is illustrated in Henry Fleckenstein’s “American Factory Decoys” and left a “unidentified” (on page 108). I have seen only one other example of this clever, well made and beautifully painted decoy.
