Folk Art Mural Landscape Painting by David Wiggins, circa 1990s, an oil on canvas fanciful landscape painting inspired to a large degree by the Hudson River School murals painted by Rufus Porter (Maine: 1792 – 1884). The whimsical and naive painting sets a grand mansion among a rolling lawn and trees leading down to the river shore.
Wiggins is an artist from Nantucket and New Hampshire, well known for his landscape wall murals. David grew up surrounded by art and later studied in Florence and Greece. He has wide experience with antiques and period decorations, having owned “Wiggins Brothers Antiques”. He was already an accomplished artist when he arrived on Nantucket in the early 1990s, and quickly became well known for his house renovation, re-decoration, and mural work. Drawing on the 19th Century New England itinerant artists, his pieces are always original and individual. Framed pieces such as the present one are looked upon as “fragments of murals.” David’s work has been shown throughout New England, New York City and in Europe.
