The HMS Northumberland was a Third Rate 74 gun Ship-of-the-Line, famous as the ship that transported Napoleon to exile on St Helena in 1798.

The verse “Forget Me Not” is signed Barten, likely Bernard Barton (English: 1784 – 1849), called “The Quaker Poet” and known for his works against the death penalty, as well as poems on Napoleon and household verses.

The ubiquitous view of the Sunderland Bridge is here wide and elaborate, much finer and more detailed than is typically seen on pottery.

The jug remains in excellent condition, with only scuffs to the lustre along the top of the rim.

Measures: 8-1/2 in H x 10-1/4 in l x 7-3/4 in W
