Early 19th Century Eglomise Silhouette of Schubert, 1825, a reverse painted on glass half-length silhouette of the Late Baroque – Early Romantic composer Franz Schubert in black with white shirt collar and gilt highlights to hair and coat, inscribed across bottom of figure “Schubert, 1825.” Mounted in a period maple frame with lemon gilt filet.
Haydn (Austria: 1797 – 1828) was one of the greatest composers of his era. In spite of a tragically short life he left an incredible body of work, including more than 600 secular vocal works, seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music, and a large body of piano and chamber music. His major works include “Erlkönig”, the Piano Quintet in A major ( the Trout Quintet), the Symphony No. 8 in B minor (the Unfinished Symphony), the “Great” Symphony No. 9 in C major, the String Quintet, the three last piano sonatas, the opera Fierrabras , the incidental music to the play Rosamunde, and the song cycles Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise.
This silhouette is from the personal collection of the late Nantucket antiques dealer Howard B. Chadwick, Jr.
