Antique Seascape Portrait of the Clipper Ship ORIENTAL by Lucius A. Briggs, (Boston and New Bedford: 1852 – 1931), 1925, a watercolor seascape with the tea clipper under rosy sky, signed and dated 1925 in the lower right, a copy of his own earlier watercolor (Briggs was an accomplished copyist).

The ship ORIENTAL was built by Jacob Bell in 1849 for the New York merchants A.A. Low & Brother. The famous extreme clipper set the record for shortest voyage from New York to Hong Kong in just 81 days. The ship went on to become the first American vessel to carry tea from China into London.

The painting is in very good condition with no fading. The paper has a few loose wrinkles in the frame which should be easily cured. The period carved and gilded frame has some chips and loss to the gesso.
