Antique New England Seascape, “Outward Bound,” by James J. McAuliffe (1848 – 1921), an oil on canvas seascape depicting a Whale Ship passing a Pinkie Schooner on opposites tacks, the partially cloudy sky has hints of early morning pink breaking through, and the seas are running fresh and frothy with spray exploding over the bows, signed and dated 1912 lower right.

McAuliffe was born in Canada but studied and worked in Massachusetts. He studied at the Boston Arts School and became known for marine subjects, ships and seascapes, as well as religious paintings.
