Antique Historic World War I Era Blue Star Service Flag, circa 1917, a linen flag having a single blue star stitched onto a white canton on a red field. A World War I flag honoring a family member in service.
The flag is structurally sound and in good condition, but does show its wonderful age in subtle fading, slight staining, and a few holes mostly along the top margin. Mounted in a new bird’s eye maple frame.
This flag was designed and patented by retired Army Captain Robert Queisser of the Ohio National guard, who wished to honor his sons who were serving in the trenches in the world war. Although not an official flag sanctioned by congress or the military, the flag became immediately popular and was flown by many families across the country. It preceded the better known Gold Star Flag honoring family members lost in service. This Size flag was intended to be displayed in one’s home window rather than flying on a pole.
