Mid to Late 19th Century Rustic Painted Game Table, a country Hepplewhite style game stand with painted checkerboard top enclosed within shallow raised gallery, above opposing narrow drawers, raised on tapering square legs. The unique opposing drawers to hold the respective checkers or chess men indicates that table was built intended for this purpose, rather than being a simple work stand later painted to serve as a game stand. The provincial craftsman used what wood he had on hand: the painted top is a hardwood, likely maple, made on a mahogany base.

The table remains in very good, sturdy condition. The game surface retains the original pencil scribe marks laying out the checkerboard for painting. The gallery surround I believe has had its black paint touched up long ago in response to wear. The wooden knob pulls on the two drawers were replaced sometime in the early to mid 20th Century.

Measures: 29 in High x 21-1/4 in Long x 18-3/4 in Wide
