Marshall Johnson, Jr. was born in Boston in 1850, so painted this seascape when he ws only 16 years of age. He survived the sinking of the Ship Sunbeam in 1868 and then turned full-time
to art, going to Europe to study their seascape techniques.

The painting is in fine condition. The marks on the reverse are not patches but only paint smears.
