The painting is very much in the style of Boston artist Clement Drew (active: 1840s – 1889) in composition and subject, but lacks his finesse in palette, missing his subtle hues often in sky breaking through the clouds. This is a folk art painting of a New England tempest blowing a full gale.
The painting remains in very good condition. The period gilded frame is likely the original, and also remains in good, strong condition with just the expected nicks and chips to the gilded gesso.
