Vintage Nantucket Purse, by Whalers Crafts, 1966, a fine hand-crafted Nantucket Purse with cane weave on rattan staves, having a carved handle with “guitar-shaped” ends reminiscent of Sandsbury’s work, with large scrimshaw carved whale tooth flying gull on a walnut top plate, scrimshaw peg for closure and knobs on handles, signed and dated on the characteristic scrimshaw plug on the inside with engraved sperm whale.

Vintage Nantucket Purse, by Whalers Crafts, 1966, a fine hand-crafted Nantucket Purse with cane weave on rattan staves, having a carved handle with “guitar-shaped” ends reminiscent of Sandsbury’s work, with large scrimshaw carved whale tooth flying gull on a walnut top plate, scrimshaw peg for closure and knobs on handles, signed and dated on the characteristic scrimshaw plug on the inside with engraved sperm whale. The basket remains in excellent condition.
Whalers Crafts sold baskets out of their shop near the corner of Main and Centre Streets on Nantucket back in the mid to late 1960s. They made a fine quality basket with their signature scrimshaw plug, but unfortunately little is remembered about them today.
