Early 20th century Folk Art driftwood dachshund, circa 1920, a natural form piece of driftwood that has been sculpted with moded clay and with Periwinkle shell eyes.
Early 20th century Folk Art driftwood dachshund, circa 1920, a natural form piece of driftwood that has been augmented with the addition of inset Periwinkle shell eyes, two drilled nares at tip of snout, modeled (clay?) ears, legs and paws, all finished in an attractive mottled red-brown surface; mounted on a flat driftwood slab. The natural form with upswept “tail” and head was perfect for this inspired folk art sculpture, and the whimsical posture and expression on the dog’s face is very dynamic and charismatic. The condition appears to likely be the same as when the sculpture was made, other than a crack in the finish on the back of the neck (in the finish only, and not in the wood itself) that is not visible from the front. Dimensions 17″ L x 6.75″ W x 8″ H.
