Antique George Washington Centennial Parade Banner, circa 1876, a print on cotton flag or banner mounted on wooden stretcher, depicting George Washington standing beside his horse Blueskin (which accompanied Washington throughout the war), holding a note which reads “Victory is ours, Paul Jones; hanging overhead is the cracked Liberty Bell, and all is within an oval cartouche bordered within a band of white stars on blue ground, set against a bold and striking arrangement of red and white stripes and two patriotic shields. The design is particularly noteworthy in that the image of Washington is unique to this banner, and is not copied from any other known source. An example of this flag rests in the Smithsonian Institute.
This scarce banner remains in extremely good condition, with no structural issues or color fading or bleeding. This has been de-accessioned from a very serious map, chart and historical memorabilia collection in New York.
