Vintage Nantucket Purse by The Wooden Jug, Nantucket, 1965-1966, a hand woven oval covered basket with cane weave on rattan staves, a carved oak swing handle with unusual notched ends, mounted with carved bone right whale on dark stained lid, knobs and washers fastening the handle, and turned peg for closure, the oak bottom plate inscribed “The Wooden Jug, Bee and Helen (Makers), Made on Nantucket Island, 1966.” The bottom plate on the interior is mounted with a penny dated 1965… apparently they began the basket in 1965 and finished it after the turn of the year.

The basket remains in excellent condition, with a subtle warm patina.
Helen and Bee lived on Cliff Road and made baskets in the mid 1960s till perhaps just into the early 1970s. They made a fine quality,well respected basket, but not much is known about them.
