19th Century Scrimshaw Inlaid Lap Desk, circa 1860, a sailor’s folk art teak traveling desk box decorated with a carved whale tooth Right Whale on lid, carved Sperm Whales on the sides, and profusely inlaid with scrimshaw diamonds, discs and stars.

19th Century Scrimshaw Inlaid Lap Desk, circa 1860, a sailor’s folk art teak traveling desk box decorated with a carved whale tooth Right Whale on lid, carved Sperm Whales on the sides, and profusely inlaid with scrimshaw diamonds, discs and stars. When opened the interior has the usual slanted writing surface and two document compartments. It is interesting to note that the desk was never mounted with a leather or felt surface (material not readily available aboard ship). The desk retains its original key and brass lock in fine working condition.
The desk remains in excellent condition.
