Windsor chairs would generally have been originally painted kin their day to hide the differing woods used; this chair is made with well matched birch and maple so may have perhaps not been painted. If it had been painted, that surface was removed well over a century ago to allow the present lovely warm patina to have developed. The condition remains excellent.
