A delightful vintage hand-crafted Ship-In-A-Bottle depicting the Nantucket Lightship, circa 1960, with a paper on carved wood hull painted in the classic red with station name NANTUCKET on both sides in bold white letters; two masts supporting light beacons with minimal standing rigging; simple deck houses and a smokestack amidship with hearty bellow of cotton wool “smoke”; an American ensign flying at the bow and stern; set on blue clay ocean painted with delicate white wake; mounted in a vintage Teacher’s scotch whisky bottle. The bottle is sealed by a cork and adorned with a hand-knotted Turk’s Head ring around the neck. The model is accompanied by its original carved mahogany stand. A beautiful large model in excellent condition, nicer than any other Nantucket lightship bottles I have seen.
The model was hand-crafted in the traditional manner for Penco, a mid-century firm in New Bedford, MA which made quality decorative nautical items sold at the time in gift shops around the Cape Cod and New Bedford area. The original labels remain in excellent condition on the bottom of the glass. This is the first Penco ship-in-a-bottle I have seen.
Measures: 4-1/4 in H x 11-1/2 in W x 2-3/4 in W on stand.
