Folk Art Carved and Decorated Sei Whale, circa 1920s. An early vintage or antique hand carved and decorated sculpture of a Sei Whale, with long and relatively slender body, tuberosities on the head, rorqual grooves on ventral surface, long pectoral fins, small adipose fin set way back on body, and broad tail flukes. The whale retains its hand painted dark green back, cream colored belly, red groove along mouth and mottled white pectoral fins. Mounted with wooden dowel on a driftwood base. The sculpture is in excellent condition with no noticeable damage.

The Sei is a rarely seen offshore deep water whale, commercially pursued in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is the third largest baleen whale and one of the fastest swimmers; it is longer and more slender and streamlined than the humpback whale. This is the only antique carving of this species I have ever seen.

Measures: 10-1/4 in High x 14-1/4 in Long x 4-5/8 in wide.
