Early 19th Century Watercolor of a Sailor Boy, a very unusual watercolor on thick paper or card, precisely cut-out and mounted on a background paper. The blond curly haired and blue eyed lad wears a rich blue midshipman’s suit, holding a boxed compass in one hand and a coiled line over one shoulder. The detail of the coiled line is painted on the lad and continued onto the background paper. His sailor suit is a bit rumpled and appears to have tears at the elbows, suggesting our lad is a shipwrecked sailor.

The image is extremely well painted, has incredible charm, and remains in excellent condition. It is mounted in a period frame with some chips and loss to the gesso along the edge and filet.
