19th Century New England Folk Art Reverse Painting on Glass Coastal Seascape, circa 1870s, unsigned, depicting a sloop in danger on the rocks, a dory coming to the rescue, figures watching on shore, and many other sails out to sea. Mounted in original faux grain painted frame. A classic New England painting of the Hudson River School, popular in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and along the Maine coast during the late Victorian age. Typically unsigned.

The painting remains in surprisingly good condition for this medium, with just a few lines scraped in the paint from the reverse. The frame has the expected chip and loss to gesso along the ebonized edges.
