19th Century Sailor’s Scrimshaw Whale Tooth with Courting Sailor, circa 1850, an excellent antique sailor’s hand engraved Sperm Whale tooth (Physeter macrocephalus) having a courting scene with a sailor and his sweetheart holding hands under a tree in a landscape with church in the background, within a tobacco leaf garland surround (a popular sailor’s symbol for prosperity), surmounted with a rose blossom at the tip; the reverse has a stylish polychromed Compass Rose above a well detailed ship on billowing seas, over a Palmate Shell flanked by two Dolphins. A good large tooth and an outstanding piece of sailor’s folk art scrimshaw.<\/p>\n
The tooth remains in very good condition with only two minor cracks at the base; the art work remains strong and distinct.<\/p>\n
This piece of antique sailor’s folk art is engraved on a tooth from a sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), is well over 100 years old, and is in full compliance with federal law as specified in the Marine Mammal Protection Act (1972), Endangered Species Act (1973), and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Director’s Order No. 210 (as amended 2014).<\/p>\n
