Antique or Early Vintage Thai Carved and Gilded Mahogany “Kneeling Buddha”, early to mid 20th Century, actually a Thepanom Guardian Angel or Devata (often mistakenly called “Kneeling Buddhas”), a fully carved in the round figure kneeling with hands in the Anjali Mudra praying posture, wearing a traditional tiered headpiece and elaborately carved tunic with sash and collar over trousers, with inset emerald colored glass beads, enamel painted eyes, and gilding over a red wax base.<\/p>\n
The figure and finish are in good but worn condition with some loss. Most notably the hands are missing, as is the top plumed tier of the headdress. There are also flakes and loss to the gilding. Not surprisingly, the wear and loss actually works and the statue has an appealing distressed appearance and patina.<\/p>\n
The Thepanom are celestial beings who worshiped the Buddha upon his attaining Enlightenment. They represent divine harmony and respect, and provide protection for temples or homes. They are often placed to provide a sense of serenity and spiritual guardianship to a room.<\/p>\n
