19th Century Sailor’s Folk Art Decorated Sea Chest, second half 19th Century, a large six board chest with elongate iron hinges, carved wooden beckets with original rope handles, iron strap reinforcements at edges, and wonderful old painted decoration featuring a fully rigged American ship under full sail with staysails aloft, flying the American ensign off the mizzen, within a rope cartouche with two whales at the bottom corners, and a conforming painted rope surround on the iron escutcheon. The divided interior includes a generous sized covered till. The painted seascape is choice and exceptional.<\/p>\n
The chest remains in fine, sturdy and strong condition, and the painted decoration likewise remains stable and strong. At some point a brass chain was added inside to hold the lid upright when opened.<\/p>\n
