An autumnal scene with classic “viktualienmarkt” that looks so much like the Munich Altstadt but is almost surely the park alongside the Prussian Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin. This is a very charming and beautiful painting.<\/p>\n
The Charlottenburg area was the seat of the Berlin Secessionist school of German progressive artists that espoused modern art, especially impressionism and expressionism. Max Liebermann in particular, a painter and printmaker, was one of the leading proponents of Impressionism in Germany and continental Europe, and a leading light of the Berlin Secessionism. The Charlottenburg art community became a sort of German “Left Bank” and was at the avant garde of of the visual arts and literature, including the likes of Alfred D\u00f6blin, Otto Dix, Gottfried Benn, Else Lasker-Sch\u00fcler, Bertolt Brecht, Stefan Zweig and Friedrich Hollaender.<\/p>\n
This painting remains in excellent condition.<\/p>\n
