19th Century Hand-Painted Circus Rounding Board
Antique circus rounding board, circa 1890, a carved and painted circus or carnival “Rounding Board”, one of the ornate panels that surrounded the central hub of an attraction, most typically a carousel. This superb folk art features a rectangular framed panel with well painted depiction of an equestrian in a colorful landscape; surmounted with a carved floral scroll pediment and a curtain swag apron with tassel drop finial. Great style and finely executed. The overall condition is very good, with the dry stable chipped and flaked paint expected for its age, and some erosion around the edges. The board has its original wrought iron mounting brackets on the back (as well as modern picture wire), and the old wooden and iron braces (probably original) for attaching the pediment and apron. This is a rare piece of circus folk art, with a much more attractive and desirable scene than most. The equestrian subject indicates that this was surely for a Knights in Shining Armor themed carousel.
