19th Century Figurehead

Price: $0.00

Carved and Polychromed Ship's Figurehead, circa 1890, of a young lady draped in the colors of liberty. The carving itself is quite sophisticated in the asymmetry of her dress and its natural flowing drapes and folds. The dry original finish is in excellent condition and the paint has mellowed to a very soft palette, now appearing almost like a milk paint. The figurehead was carved in one piece continuous with the ship's stem and is in excellent condition with only the obvious scuffs, a few minor cracks from the wood drying and shrinking over the years, and a small bit of wood loss under the bottom (where unpainted wood was exposed when she was cut off the stem of the ship). She is very pretty and is likely to have been an accurate portrait of a specific person, rather than the formal stylized Grecian/Roman features typically seen on figureheads.  Height 34 inches.  Price on request.
