Mid 19th C. Scotsman Tobacco Trade Figures
Two Hand Carved and Gilded Scotsmen Tobacconist Countertop Trade Figures, Mid 19th Century, intended to be secured by screw onto the counter in a tobacco shop to advertise fine Scottish milled snuff. Each figure is fully carved in the round with superb detail to facial features, hair and sideburns, muscle tone, texture and drape to the kilt and sporran. Each retains the original finish with gilding worn deeply into the wood providing a deep, subtle yet lustrous patina. Both are in excellent condition (one has his Jacobite feather cockade reattached on his tam but it is not apparent Height: 20 3/4 inches. $22,000 for the matched pair.
Tobacco Trade Figures are rarely seen in pairs. Single countertop figures were sold at Northeast Auctions in 2000 for $6600 (a comparable Scotsman), Skinner's in 2001 for $11,500, Cyr Auctions in 2004 for $5750, and at Skinner's in 2004 for $5000 and $6700.
