Painting of the Clipper Ship 'Witch of the Wave at Anchor in Boston Harbor'
Antique painting of "The Clipper Ship 'Witch of the Wave At Anchor in Boston Harbor," American School, mid-19th century, unsigned, a delightful primitive oil on canvas seascape with the iconic clipper ship portrayed naively oversized at anchor in Boston Harbor, with tiny sailboats and barges in the foreground; titled across the bottom. The Boston designed and Portsmouth (NH) built extreme clipper "Witch of the Wave" was launched in 1851 and immediately set a new speed record for sailing from Boston to Calcutta in 81 days. She continued to run for 34 years.
This early painting is in very good condition for its age, with two small patches on the reverse, and a few tiny spots of paint flake and loss.
